DIN Abrasion Tester: Test Method and Operating Steps
A practical overview of the DIN abrasion test for footwear rubber, including specimen mounting, test loading, mass-loss measurement and equipment cleaning.

A DIN abrasion tester is used to determine the abrasion resistance of rubber materials used in footwear and other products.
During the test, the specimen surface is rubbed against specified abrasive paper over a defined distance. The resulting mass loss, volume loss and wear depth can be evaluated and compared with a standard reference rubber.
Test procedure:
1. Push the specimen fully into the holder and tighten the holder nut clockwise with a wrench. Secure the specimen without overtightening or deforming it.
2. Install the required test weight. The basic lever weight is 250 g when no additional weight is installed.
3. Weigh the specimen before and after abrasion. Test at least three specimens of the same material and calculate the comparative abrasion value using the applicable standard formula.
ΔV: volume loss (mm³); Q: specimen density (mg/mm³).
ΔG: specimen mass loss (mg); S: abrasion loss of the standard specimen (mg).
4. Remove abrasion debris from the abrasive paper between tests to maintain measurement accuracy.
5. After all specimens have been tested, switch off the main power and clean debris from the machine.
Reporting:
Calculate and report the abrasion volume loss of the tested material in accordance with the applicable test standard.
